Embracing Balance and Self-Compassion in Training

I find myself in a familiar scenario – the time I set aside for training is here, but my training plan sits ignored. Isn’t this the essence of existence? The pursuit of readiness for the impending, coupled with the human propensity to falter in execution.

In this chapter of my journey, my body pleads for respite, yearning for rejuvenation even as the demand for enhanced endurance and extended miles persists.  It’s a tug of war between what I should be doing and what my body craves. On top of that, life has piled up its own agenda, pulling me in multiple directions simultaneously.

The temptation to push through and stick to the training schedule is strong. But I’m reminded of a lesson learned while walking the Camino – complete readiness is a myth. Embracing this truth is oddly reassuring. It means that maybe I won’t hit the distance target I set, or perhaps I’ll need to compromise and take alternative transportation. Then again, maybe I’m better equipped than I give myself credit for.

So, as I grapple with this balancing act, I encourage you to find your equilibrium too. Reflecting on the wisdom of the nuns in LePuy, there’s a phrase that resonates – “Don’t get ahead of grace.” In other words, don’t rush, don’t force. Allow things to unfold naturally.

Allow this mantra to be your compass, your North Star, as you navigate the nexus of ambition and self-compassion. Remember, life’s journey is a blend of plans and improvisation. By heeding this balance, we can navigate the path ahead with a sense of purpose and self-awareness.
